As Lion fans know all to well, replacing the legendary Barry Sanders has not been an easy task.  The Lions have drafted dozens of backs, overpaid in free agency for a solution and have yet to come up with a back that is even worthy of being a full time starter, let alone a pro bowler.  The Lions traded up in the draft and selected Jahvid Best, the star running back from Cal, hoping he would be the every down game breaking running threat they so deserately needed.

Unfortunately the Lions never drafted the type of offensive lineman to open up holes for Best, or really any other running back not named Barry Sanders.  So despite Best having concussion issues in college, specifically due to hits like this:

The Lions hoped he would be the ground attack to complement superstar wide receiver Calvin Johnson.  Unfortunately it looks like Best career may be in jeopardy.  The following statement was release by Lions general manager Martin Mayhew:

“After today’s consultation with medical experts, including representatives from our medical and training staffs, it has been determined that Jahvid will not be permitted to return to play at this time..Throughout this entire process we always have placed the highest priority on what is best for Jahvid from a health and safety standpoint,” Mayhew continued. “While today’s decision is disappointing from a football perspective, we fully and entirely respect and support this recommendation.

“Jahvid will continue to work with our medical and training staffs with the hope that he ultimately will be cleared to return to the playing field.”

Best looks to have ended is career with 255 carries for 945 yards and 6 touchdowns.
